Students Step Up to the BBC

2 March 2010

Glasgow BBC450

Two Cardonald HND Communications with Media students have fought off stiff competition to gain a place on the BBCs prestigious Step Up training programme.

Mark Fraser and Lauren McCann are midway through the project which aims to give young people the skills and confidence to work in news. This is the first time Step Up has ran outside of London and is a great opportunity for the students to gain experience and knowledge of the broadcasting industry.

Each attends the programme one day a week. Lauren, who is on the TV workshop explains: “We either work in TV, radio or online and each student is assigned a mentor. The experience has been great so far- we have met the news team, worked on Reporting Scotland, developed stories and interviews, learned about voice coaching and carried out practical work.”

At the end of the programme, one of the student’s news reports will be broadcast by the BBC, who are also filming the learners in action for an online video.
